Time for more of my DIY office makeover!

I’m all about doing things myself and saving $$$$. I normally start with some ‘online inspiration.’  Yup, you guessed it, “Pinterest!” Although, I have found over the years that if someone likes what you have made and they ask where you got the idea from, if you say “Pinterest” than they disregard most everything that you just did.  It seems like they think that you reached into your computer and grabbed whatever is shown on Pinterest and ‘viola’ there it is!  Nope!! So far from the real, time consuming truth!  Have you ever seen a “nailed it” blog of Pinterest attempts?!!!

So….  I have learned to answer the ever frequent question “where did you get that idea from” with “on the web.”  Somehow people give you more credit when the word “Pinterest is not involved!  🙂  There’s my free advice for the day (especially for all of you Bride’s out there).

Okay, so this is a continuation of the last blog that I did on the DIY office makeover. This is what the wall now looks like with the decal on it.

Abigail Turns ONE!

Abigail Turns ONE!  I had the privilege of not only taking Abigail’s 1 year old photos, but also taking them during her birthday party!  This was a first for me. Her birthday party was held at her Grandparents house and the theme was ‘hearts and pink.’  Mommy did a great job of pulling it all together and somehow still smiling and looking cool, calm, and collected!

Joel & Darla Engagement

Joel & Darla met at Summer Camp and the rest is history!  Joel’s family has an evangelistic ministry called “The Wylers on Wheels” that has them travelling around the United States almost year round.  They even just came out with a new music CD.   So for the past couple of years it just so happens that, Darla has gone to Camp Tohiglo for a week to be a camp counselor, the very same week that the Wyler family is scheduled to be there.  It wasn’t love at first site although Darla admits to thinking he was a “really nice guy.”

They started dating a year ago and have been able to get together about 5 or 6 times since then whether it’s Joel coming to PA, or Darla travelling to wherever his family might be ministering.  Darla visited Joel in Florida at Thanksgiving and they took a walk on Disney’s beach and that is where they found a heart drawn in the sand and where Joel got down on one knee and asked Darla to spend forever with him.  She of course said “YES!”

Winter or Spring?

Today snow covers the buds on the trees. We thought spring was finally here, but winter still wants to ‘hang around’ a little bit longer.

My husband and I went to Sight and Sound Theaters last night to see “Samson” with a bunch of friends from church and then to our favorite fast food restaurant Chic Fil A to get a milk shake after the show. We were kid free for the night and spent an extra hour sleeping this morning and woke to see a very white, beautiful view out of our window!  According to google weather it was suppose to have stopped at precisely 8:45…. lol!  Where do they come up with this stuff!  That’s okay, yesterday I laughed when I was told that it would snow 2 to 3 inches this morning.  Mmmmmhmmmm… okay… it just did!Winter or Spring? Joseph pointed out the beautiful buds on the trees and the snow just sitting on them like a little crown and I did what any photographer would do… grabbed my camera and headed out in the snow in my pajama pants!  This was a very peaceful and rare experience not only because it does not normally snow on beautiful buds, but also because I would normally have children following me!  I am a portrait photographer. My passion is people and capturing family life!  But these moments capturing God’s outdoor beauty up close and ‘frozen’ was inspiring and absolutely breathtaking!Winter or Spring? I am working on updating my office.  This has been YEARS in the making and sorely needed! I have had this business since I was 18 and it has grown with me. So as life changed, I moved and changed my office to adapt.  That being said…. I have never taken the time to sit down and think “how would I really like my office to look?” Thanks to renaming and re-branding our business, and my employee Dolly’s help…. we have now taken the time to dream a little and make the office our ‘dream office.’  I spent a lot of time with Dolly and Joseph, looking at different studio’s and offices on the internet and compiled a bunch of photos to make an ‘inspiration board.’ Thanks to Pinterest, I didn’t have to do it the old fashioned way.

Another thing about us… We are very frugal and very DIY people, before DIY was invented!  Again, thanks to Pinterest, we don’t have to come up with all of the ideas on our own. We would rather do it ourselves than pay full price for something.   So we will be re-using as many things as possible. That being said… I also love to shop… 🙂  So I will be getting a couple of little things to make everything a little nicer!

Dolly faithfully came a couple of days in a row to prime the walls again and again as well as cover up all of the picture frame holes from the previous owner as well as myself (there were a LOT). Then she painted the green-ish blue color on the top half and we added an accent spot at the bookshelf.

I found these cute little letter blocks that light up while looking for frames at AC Moore. We covered the filing cabinets in white paint and went crazy with the paint on the old wood table and chairs.  We got rid of a huge filing cabinet and graduated to a smaller one (that also needed a coat of paint).  Now my printer can sit on my filing cabinet instead of taking up most of my desk space.

Funny thing was that while we were moving things around, I put the ‘now white’ wire holders on the side of my desk next to the printer and said to Dolly “now what can I put on these?” I know that if I couldn’t fill them now, they would get filled with other stuff that would clutter.  Then I realized that all of these years I have been getting up and going to the other side of the room for paper for the printer!!!! LOL!!! It’s now nestled RIGHT NEXT to my printer!!!!  It makes me extra happy now whenever the printer says “out of paper.”  🙂

Cape May, NJ – Deitrich Wedding

This wedding is very near and dear to my heart because it is my baby sisters wedding.

Their wedding ceremony took place at Cape May, NJ Lighthouse Beach.

I always wanted a sister named Dolly and I waited through three sisters and then a brother until I got my own live “baby Dolly.”  We have always been close and I have been a second Mom to her all of her life.

She has also followed in my footsteps and trained under for me for many years and I’m so happy to have her as my employee on photoshoots and right hand in the office.  She has grown into an amazing, godly woman who I am so proud of.

Jared & Dolly met a couple of years ago while making pizzas at Hershey Park… Yup!  How ironic!  It grew from a friendship and long conversations about their faith into a deep love for each other.  God has brought two beautiful lives together and it’s amazing to see their love for each other and for their heavenly Father.

Now, on to their wedding day!

Since my brother is a pilot and had flown down to the beach for the wedding, they started off their day looking down over Cape May!

You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day!

Since I have done Dolly’s many hair-doo’s all of her life… guess who got to do her hair and make up for her wedding??!!  Yup, I wear many hats when it comes to my siblings wedding days.

My beautiful Dolly headed to see her Groom who was waiting for her on the beach where the Cape May/Lewis Ferry boat comes in. It was awesome to be her photographer and follow her throughout every part of her day and I will always cherish these memories.

Xander’s First Photoshoot

We were so happy to do Xander’s First Photoshoot.  Joseph has watched Xander’s Daddy grow up and has been like a ‘big brother’ to him. Two years ago Joseph stood in front of a church as a Groomsmen at his wedding and two of our daughters were their flower girls. Now we are privileged to watch their love blossoming into a beautiful family.

FIRST J & D STUDIO BLOG!!! Wow!!! This has been 16 years in the making!  When I started this business back in 2000, I had no idea how far this pathway would lead!

If you enjoy reading ‘the whole story,’ then go for it!  Otherwise, just scan our archived photos!  Enjoy!

Our Story…

Growing up in a large, close-knit family, I enjoyed ‘setting up’ my siblings for photo-shoots in front of my bedroom curtains or mirror or anywhere else I could find ‘great’ backgrounds. My Mom must have brought countless rolls of 110 and 35 mm film to be processed for me (thanks Mom!) .

My little sister who enjoyed posing for my never ending photoshoots

When I was close to 18 years old, through my parents wisdom and God’s leading, I began working at a portrait studio. I loved working with children and getting them to smile. There was so much joy that came from capturing that child’s ‘perfect smile’ for Mom’s who had never had someone take the time to ‘really try’ in the past. I had an incredible manager there that taught me everything she knew and really gave me the ‘eye’ for good cropping and posing.

The rules at that studio were that we were not allowed to work for competition, and since the studio did not offer outdoor photos, I was able to start taking outdoor senior and family photos on the side.  This continued as I became assistant manager at the studio and increased my skills, as well as my love for portraiture and preserving family memories.

After leaving the studio, I was asked to photograph my first wedding.

It was a request by a really sweet lady that had always brought her children to me at the studio for their yearly photos.  I had always wanted to photograph a wedding and this seemed like a great opportunity.  However, I was very apprehensive because Wedding’s are a once in a lifetime thing and I wanted to be sure that I could give them the best photos possible (I had heard too many horror stories of other weddings- “I thought they could take good pictures…”).  So I apprenticed under a professional wedding photographer and he let me photograph by his side at a couple of weddings.  His skills, humor and very relaxed manner were vital to my beginning years of wedding photography.  (Thanks Tim McGowan!)
